Not all lithium-ion battery fires are created equal, which means that the fire extinguishers needed to tackle them also vary. This all depends on the type of devices that may pose fire risks, as well as the size and scale of their application.
From mobile phone stores to e-scooter charging points, we highlight the specific fire extinguishers needed for each type of lithium-ion-containing device up to 900Wh.
Designed specifically for lithium-ion battery fires, our revolutionary CommanderEDGE LFX range works by fiercely tackling the flames of the fire, with remarkable heat-absorbing properties it then breaks down the chain reaction in thermal runaway and prevents other cells from heating. LFX also protects from secondary A-class fires, and this allows the extinguisher to quickly tackle ‘peripheral’ fires that have been caused by the exploding batteries. However, it’s important to understand that each LFX extinguisher has been designed to tackle certain battery capabilities.
The Watt-hour (Wh) rating of a battery is a critical factor in determining the appropriate LFX fire extinguisher. As the Wh rating increases, so do the potential fire risks, as well as the size of the fire extinguisher required:
Devices up to 300Wh ratings require an LFX fire extinguisher of at least three litres , in order to tackle potential fires confidently. This compact yet high-performing unit is ideal for workshops using cordless drills, mobile phone and laptop repair stores, and homes where items such as laptops are in use.
When the Watt-hours reach up to 600, a 6ltr LFX fire extinguisher is required to mitigate the risks of any potential fires. These units are also well-suited to environments such as supermarkets, which house large amounts of lithium-ion-powered scanners, as well as homes with devices such as hoverboards.
In 2023, London Fire Brigade were called to an e-bike or e-scooter fire once every two days on average. Our 9ltr LFX fire extinguishers are designed to safeguard these devices (those with a power range up to 900Wh), perfect for manufacturers and rental services.
LFX is endothermic. Its foam-like texture means that LFX sticks to the surface of a battery for a lot longer than a regular liquid would, hugely increasing its ability to draw heat out of the cells of the battery. But finding the right volume for specific applications is paramount in making sure each unit can perform exactly how it needs to.
