CheckFire aims to equip all our customers with innovative products and unrivalled knowledge and insight for vital fire safety and protection. Throughout our 45 years in the trade, we have celebrated many milestones with so much more development to come in the years ahead.
The CheckFire story begun early in 1975 when Dr David Robins decided to change his career in education to one of business venture. With the help and advice off a close friend in Coventry he stepped out into selling and maintaining Fire Extinguishers. The home pantry was soon cleared out and turned into what became the CheckFire workshop and stores. A Morris Minor van was purchased and that’s how the story was lifted off the ground.
Soon after launching one of the very first fire extinguishers sold was a 2-gallon water cartridge operated fire extinguisher.
The office and warehouse have expanded over time but the first upgrade was in 1983, converting the double garage into an office.
In 1992 we relocated from our original home office, to our office based in Caerphilly – an office we still operate from to this day.
This year marked the beginning of the Commander range. It was originally brought in via a component form and was both assembled and filled in our own workshops as a service exchange range. The range was officially registered as Commander in 2007.
Seven years later we introduced CommanderEDGE as our fully Kitemarked range, which also includes our brand exclusive units, MultiCHEM and EnviroFoam.
In 2015 we acquired a our 30,000ft2 Distribution Centre, just a few miles down the road from our Caerphilly head office, which equipped us to effectively trade on a national scale and further expand our team to bring the best possible service to our customers.
2017 was a very exciting year for us as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Commander brand registration. With over 15 fire extinguishers included in the range, this was a very proud moment for the team.
The launch of the Contempo brand was an industry first, born out of the realisation that fire safety was being sacrificed in order to maintain appearances within luxury decor settings. The Polished Gold, Antique Copper and Stainless Steel finishes were designed not so that they blended in with their surroundings, but they stood out as a feature in their own right.
This was an exciting year for product development at CheckFire. We remodelled a number of our Commander units, with many now featuring higher fire ratings and Kitemark certification on selected units. We were also proud to launch our Commander Stands in 2018 and they’re still going strong five years on!
A fresh new look was given to the CheckFire website in 2018 and since then it has grown in content, resources, and shopping capabilities – with lots more exciting developments still in the pipeline.
2019 was the year that we transformed the design of our Tubular Stand offering. We worked with our customers on understanding the challenges they faced with the previous design to develop a solution that took the pains away. The Single and Double Tubular Stands are available across all finishes; Classic Red, Stainless Steel, Antique Copper and Polished Gold.
The Commander Safety Box was the latest innovation to join our range of Commander storage solutions in 2020 and we also introduced Rapid-10, a portable sanitising solution, demonstrating how we can all play a part in keeping the nation safe and protected from Coronavirus.
The latest edition of the CheckFire brochure became available in March 2020. It was launched in digital format, to not only support with the reduction in paper and our carbon footprint via it’s delivery, but in line with our commitment of taking thorough and proactive measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.
In April 2021, we made developments to our existing water, foam and powder 6ltr/kg CommanderEDGE fire extinguishers. Featuring increased fire ratings*, the newly developed fire extinguishers are at the fore of product innovation and feature the quality and performance you can trust from CommanderEDGE.
*6ltr foam only
We were delighted to expand the existing CommanderEDGE range in 2022 and introduce a 6ltr Water Mist in the beginning of the year, featuring a multi-class 13A 25F fire rating. Later in the year, we launched our Commander Stand Inserts; available in both small and large sizes, the inserts are easily slotted into the base of the Commander Stand to provide additional protection and stability of fire extinguishers.
In 2023, we introduced our new and improved construction fire point stand. We know fire safety equipment and trolleys can be heavy and bulky to transport and store compliantly, especially in industries such as construction or hospitality, where projects can change location. Flatpack mobile fire points save time and energy, reducing labour costs and damage risks.
To continue providing a market-leading service to our trade customers, we were delighted to move into our new head office in South Wales. Alongside our northern depot in Rotherham, the head office has a designated Order & Collect entrance at the front of the building, so customers can easily pick up orders in just 60 minutes.
Designed specifically for lithium-ion battery fires, we introduced our groundbreaking LFX range as part of The Green Range in 2024. These revolutionary fire extinguishers get to work instantly, removing a large amount of excessive heat, rapidly reducing the temperature, and cocooning the fuel of a lithium-ion battery fire in its infancy.
